Top 15 Best New Features in Revit 2027

revit update Apr 07, 2026

Revit 2027 is now available. Here is our top 15 favorite new features.

New Autodesk AI Assistant

Before jumping to the best new features, let's tackle what will probably get the most attention: the Autodesk AI assistant.

This AI tool was announced last fall at Autodesk University. In the "live demo", the assistant was shown to automate window placement in a façade.

This assistant is currently very limited. I've tried a dozen tasks, and most of them failed.

I asked to create a sheet and place a floor plan view and a ceiling plan. It did create the sheet, but added a section and told me it couldn't create a ceiling plan.

I asked to set a red graphic override for walls with a fire rating of 60. It told me "mission accomplished!", but nothing happened. I asked it to create a view filter instead of a graphic override. It told me it didn't have the capacity to do that.

I asked what happened, and it went on a typical AI rant of "I am so sorry!", but proceeded with confusing instructions and follow-up.

So what exactly is this chatbot supposed to be used for? I would recommend superior 3rd party alternatives such as BIMLOGIQ and NonicaTab.

Right now, Autodesk marked this tool as a "tech preview", so we'll see if the "real" release is better. As a BIM Manager, I would ask users to avoid using this assistant to avoid unwanted changes inside your projects.

We'll explore the assistant more deeply in an upcoming post.

What Autodesk is saying: We’ve talked to Autodesk about the AI assistant. They say it is mainly meant to help users query and analyze their models, rather than make changes to them. They also note that because it is entirely cloud-based, it will improve over time without requiring a new Revit patch or update.

They also said the main target audience is not advanced users or BIM managers, but beginners. One of the intended use cases is helping people get guidance on how to use Revit.

Now, let's jump to the actual best features.

1- Rule-Based Numbering

This one is awesome. It lets you number elements in your project following pre-set rules. For example, you can set door mark values based on the room in which they are placed.

And even better, any new element added to the project will be automatically numbered following the logic.

Go to the Numbering tool in the Manage tab.

You have to create a new numbering template. Click on the + icon.

Give a name to the template. In this case, we'll number the doors by room.

This tool works with view filters. You can use an existing filter or create a new one.

We target the Doors category. To allow users to exclude certain doors from the rule, we filter out all doors with the value Exclude in the Comments parameter.

Select the new filter you have just created. Then, select the parameter you want to number. This must be an instance parameter, so we pick Mark.

Now, you must set the Partitioning. This is set to group elements together based on a specific parameter value. In this example, select parameters from To Room.

We want to group doors by the To Room: Number parameter. Activate this parameter.

At the top of the menu, you will see the number of elements and partitions. In this case, it means there are 14 doors partitioned into 6 rooms.

Now, it's time to set the Number formatting. This is how the numbering is going to be formatted for all affected elements.

You can pick between numbers, uppercase letters, and lowercase letters. In this case, we select uppercase letters.

Then, we add the To Room: Number parameter and set it on top. We set a sample value and a separator.

You will see a preview value of the formatting. When you are happy, click on OK.

When ready, make sure to enable the template and click on Apply.

Magic! All doors are now numbered based on the room they are placed in.

What is truly great about this tool is that if you add a new door to the project, the rule automatically applies. The door mark matches the numbering rules without requiring a manual refresh.

This is an A+ feature: solves a real problem, great UI, well executed. Kudos to Autodesk.

2- Tags Leaders Enhancements

In Revit 2026: You don't have much control over tag leaders. With certain tags, the end of the leader can appear in awkward spots, with no way to adjust it.

In Revit 2027: All tags now have control points for the start and end points of leaders. You can click on the clip icon to manually adjust each end.

You can also snap the leader endpoints to Revit elements. In this case, we snap the endpoint to the edge of a wall.

And finally, you can align the elbow of the leader with other elements. This allows you to vertically align the elbows of all tags.

However, this has only been partly applied to the leaders of generic annotation families. You still can't adjust the beginning point of leaders for generic annotation instances.

3- Walls Hosted on Walls

In Revit 2026: Autodesk added the ability to create walls by segment or by room.

In Revit 2027: You can now host walls on other walls. When creating a wall, select this tool in the draw option, and activate the Hosted Wall option.

Then, click on a wall segment to create a new hosted wall. In most cases, you should activate the Auto Join option, so the openings will be cut and the wall lines will be cleaned up.

When the hosted wall is selected, you will see various options in the ribbon to either select the main host, make the wall unhosted, or pick a new wall host.

There is also an option to have an offset from the host.

If the value of the offset is bigger than 152mm (6"), the hosted wall won't cut the openings.

Warning: there is a major issue with this feature. For opening families such as doors and windows, the extra hosted wall isn't considered in the total wall thickness. That means elements such as frames or trims won't have the proper position.

As an example, you can see this door frame ends at the host wall only, and doesn't extend to the hosted wall. That creates a geometric conflict with the trim.

4- Options Bar Removal

In the last few releases, Autodesk has been gradually removing the options bar, moving the settings to the ribbon instead.

In Revit 2026, the settings when using an option such as Rotate would show up in the ribbon, along with nice icons.

However, the job wasn't finished. For example, when creating a wall, many values still had to be set in the options bar.

In Revit 2027, the job is finished, and almost everything has been moved to the ribbon, including options when creating walls or stairs.

5- Set Multi-Category Tags as Default

In Revit 2026: You cannot set multi-category tags as the default option for specific categories. You had to manually select the "multi-category" tag option.

In Revit 2027: Multi-category tags can be set to default to all categories.

For example, we can set the same multi-category tag for walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs.

And when using the Tag All tool, you can also pick a multi-category tag family.

6- Stairs Numbering Improvements

The stairs numbering tool now supports type parameters. You can adjust the text style and pick a great font such as Comic Sans. You will find options to modify the text and graphics above the cut mark, separately from the text below the cut mark.

You can see the result, where everything above the cut mark has a different text style.

In addition, you can now control the visibility of numbers above and below the cut mark in the Visibility/Graphics menu.

That means you can decide to only number the treads below the cut mark.

7- New Residential Sample Project

You will find a new sample project called the Pacific Continental Residence. It has been modeled by BIM Pure friend Paul Aubin.

It includes several design options, each with a different architectural style. These options have cool names such as El Carbrillo, The Charmant, and The Dover.

By looking at these models, you might find inspiration for advanced modeling techniques.

8- Accelerated Graphics Improvements

In Revit 2026: Autodesk added an Accelerated Graphics option that uses your GPU. However, the feature was quite incomplete and wasn't compatible with several graphics options.

In Revit 2027: The Accelerated Graphics feature has been improved and is now out of the tech preview phase. It is compatible with graphic overrides, transparency, halftone, and provides consistent graphics for linked models.

However, some view options are still missing, such as shadows.

You can see the difference when the option is active in the image below.

The main purpose of this tool isn't high-quality presentation views. It is to accelerate the navigation speed in complex models.

It is available not only for 3D views, but for any kind of view in Revit. You'll notice that activating it in a floor plan view removes all line thickness.

9- Design Options Improvements

If you assign a view to a specific design option, you won't be able to select it in the main model, similar to other elements in the option. You'll have to set the option active to select the view.

For example, let's say you create a new section and make the view only visible in Option 1.

In Revit 2027, you won't be able to select the view in the main model anymore. This is consistent with other elements placed in a design option.

To modify that section, you have two options:

1) Make Option 1 active

2) Check the Exclude Options tool

Another improvement: the Active Only and Exclude Options toggle state now persists throughout a Revit session. In other words, if you uncheck Exclude Options, it will stay unchecked until you close Revit.

10- Material Carbon Information

Carbon material assets have been added. When selecting a material and clicking on the plus icon to add a new asset, you'll have the option to pick Carbon. You can pick an asset on the list and use a value from EC3.

After assigning this asset, the material will have a leaf icon next to its name, indicating that it includes a carbon asset.

There are some limitations. No carbon properties are currently assigned to the out-of-the-box material libraries, and they are not yet integrated with Forma Carbon Insights.

11- Control Line Weights of Linked Models

In Revit 2026: Linked models use the line weights settings from the host model.

In Revit 2027: You can now select the line weights of the linked model instead.

Go to the Visibility Graphics menu. Then, go to Revit Links. Go to the Display Settings of the linked model.

At the bottom of the settings, you will see the new Line weights option. Activate the Custom option, and select either By host model or By linked model.

When picking the Linked Model option, you can see the effect on the line weight of the linked file. They become thicker as the linked file has different line weight options.

12- Forma Directly Inside Revit

Some features of Forma Site Design are now integrated directly inside Revit. Autodesk calls this "Forma Connected Client". For example, you'll be able to bring contextual data into your Revit model.

In the Analyze tab, you'll also find wind analysis and carbon insights.

13- Snowdon Towers 2.0

The Snowdon Towers sample project has been updated with a new retail space. Check out sheet collection 108, where you'll find complete documentation of this space.

Also, the facades model and the architectural model of the project have been merged instead of being separate.

14- Updated IFC Parameter Mapping

When exporting an IFC, you will see a new Property Mapping Menu.

From here, you can assign specific parameter mapping from Revit parameters. You don't have to use a text file anymore.

15- ACC Issues Directly in Revit

In Revit 2026: To see ACC issues in Revit, you need to install a separate add-in.

In Revit 2027: The Issues tool is now integrated natively inside Revit. You can view and create issues from there.

More Features:

Dynamo 4.0.2 Update

The new Dynamo version includes improvements to package management and integrates PythonNet 3.

Auto Expand Sheet Views Options

When you right-click the project browser, you will see a new option called Auto Expand Sheet Views on View Placement.

When you drag and drop a view to a sheet, the sheet will automatically expand to reveal all views placed on it.

Extended Properties

Some parameters in coordination models or ACC can appear as Revit parameters.

Migration to .NET 10

Relevant to add-in developers: Revit 2027 now uses .NET 10.
